-hershellayton:

[ Layton’s eyes started to adjust in the dark. From what he could see, they were in a long corridor. Maroon walls with framed paintings, wooden floor boards, and locked doors. The windows were tinted to prevent the sunlight from creeping the corners of the room. Layton squinted. At the far end of the corridor was a faint light of a yellow light bulb. He gripped onto his luggage and smiled at Luke. ]

Perhaps the librarian is working there. Let’s go—and remember to watch your step.

[ The professor gave a small chuckle as he proceeded to walk down the hall. ]

[ Luke heard Layton’s footsteps growing softer. With his eyes still adjusting to the dark, Luke half-blindedly followed the creaks of sound. ]

P-Professor… Can you slow down a bit?

[ Layton inserted the coin on the puzzle piece. He looked up after hearing the soft click from the padlock. The professor took a step back as he watched the mahogany door rumble quietly. On the wooden surface were copper cogs turning swiftly. It had a sort of rhythm. Click-click-shwipp. Click-click-shwipp. Layton assumed there were more than a hundred of them. Such a complicated locked door. He couldn’t help but wonder. Why does this building need tight security? ]

[ … The cogs stopped moving. It seems that they were allowed to enter now that the door was unlocked. Layton opened the door, then turned to Luke. ]

Watch your step, Luke. It’s awfully dark inside.

[ Layton and Luke carefully step inside the pitch-black room. The air was mildly heavy as they both stumbled on the creaking wooden floor. Luke squinted his eyes and waved his arms in front of him in attempt to find a light switch of some sort. ]

P-Professor, I can’t see anything here…!

[ A bead of sweat starts to form on Luke’s forehead. Just in that moment, Luke lost his footing, but quickly suspended his fall with his arms. Luke didn’t like the eerie situation at all. ]
